Thwaites has a been appointed to carry out the Mayoral duties. . - ■ There was a larger attendance than ‘ usual on Tuesday evening, at the weekly euchre tourney held by the Women's Institute. , The games were fulf of interest and everyone spent a pleasant evening. Mrs Elwood and- Mr Thorn, secured the trophies for winning the , most games; Mrs Radford .anti, Mr Con- : chie receiving the consolation awards. The Borough Council on Tuesday evening granted leave of absence for h an indefinite period to the Mayor (Mr E. Butt), who is an inmate of a private hospital, and a letter is to be forwarded to him conveying the bestVJ wishes of the Council for his speedy recovery. j The usual fortnightly card party xa i aid of the Plunket funds was held in the Plunket rooms last evening, there * being a record attendance. The ] prize, a dainty blue duchess set, do- ; nated by Mrs T. C. Thwaites; was won 1 by Mis Hennessey-and Mr Pi Buckman was the winner of the cake donat- , ed by Mrs Clifford Jones. The committee are most grateful to the public for their support, and to all those who assisted to make these functions the . success they are. Good prises are being donated for the next tournameiit., SHANNON WOMEnT INSTITUTE ' ■ At the usual monthly meeting of the Women's Institute held on Wednesday evening, Mrs E. W. Taylor presided and in opening the meeting voiced the sympathy of members with Mrs and Miss y Butt, and with Mrs and Miss Aim in the anxiety, they are at present feeling through the severe illness of Mr Butt v and Mr Aim. All joined in the sincere wish-' that both, gentlemen would soon be restored to good health. Among the correspondence was a letter of thanks from the organiser of the fund started to procure a car for the >v Dominion organiser, and to which Shannon had contributed £5. It was stated - that, so successful Was the effort that • a new Ford ear had been bought and would be ready for the organiser (Miss Spencer), when she returned home to Eissington at the cud of the month, after a visit to Auckland. Miss cer is expected to visit Palmerston i "Jloith at the end of October and is anxious to hieet delegates from all - Wellington Provincial Institutes, with a view to starting a Wellington Federation. Un-:; fortunately hot many members had studied the syllabus sufficiently to note the - . prepared “reading or,recitation," but all answered the call in some way, ’and - of the prepared readings, Mrs Pettitt's poem, “The Sailor's Mother" was acr- ' corded hearty applause. Games andcompetitions were entered into in good -style, the ‘ ‘ sentence'' competition being proclaimed a tie between tlxtee members, Mos dames Burling, Black-,, bounie and L. Eichardson, Several entries came in for the “best 'dressed Is doll," and= some capable and painstaking work was inevidence. After much deliberation and ' minute examination of detail it was decided by vote, that one dressed throughout' in white crepe-de-chine, complete in every detail of a little girls’ clothing, and every garment removable, was, the winner. This was* the work of Mrs , T. King, juur. ; Supper was provided by Mesdames Eichardson, Ellwood and Wiggins. », It was decided to leave the date of the sale of work in abeyance for a while in the hope that Mrs Butt #niay return home before final arrangements need be made. The weekly sewing machine meeting* are stilb being held in the Plunket room eveiy Wednesday at 3 p.m., .when all well-wishers will be welcome.
