“THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER.”

Fred Williams leaves for the front without avowing his love for Mary Phillips, who learning that her father resents her interests in Fred, goes to the front with other society girls in the entertainment division. There she meets Fred, and they agree to marry. The ceremony is performed by a chaplain in the presence of witnesses and the happy couple go to their room. Next day Fred moves up to the front, and after bidding him goodbye Mary returns to her hotel she learns that the chaplain who has married her is an imposter, a deserter who had donned the guise of a deserter to make his escape. She rushes back and frantically endeavours to signal to Fred as he marches by, but he mistakes these for parting salutes and waves to her. She then writes him a letter telling him the whole story of the terrible deception. At the front Fred, who is always dreaming of her, receives the letter, and is in despair when he learn that Mary is soon to become a mother. He starts off on a perilous mission, that of saving a. company of troops. He reaches his destination, explains his mission, and then makes for Louvre where Mary is waiting for him. Staggering down the road, he is swallowed up in a cloud of dust and smoke when a shell bursts near him. Meanwhile Mary has collapsed and is sent away in an ambulance. When peace comes in, Phillips receives a letter from Mary. She has sought, vainly for Fied for a year, and is now returning home with her child. He receives his daughter and her child with open arms. Mary her father, and Fred’s mother go to a church where an amazing climax, which the picture adequately reveals, transpires.
