A CALLOUS CRIME.

CONSTABLE SHOT DEAD ON LONE-

LY ROAD.

NOTEBOOK STILL IN HAND,

(By Telegraph-Press Assn.-Copyright.) (Received This Day. 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 27.

Police Constable Gutteridge was brutally murdered in a lonely Essex road, his body being discovered early this morning. A pencil was clutched in his hand and a notebook was near. Four bullet wounds were in his head anti neck, two of which were fired at a distance and the other two with the muzzle pressed close to each eye, both eyes being shattered. The police theory is that Gutteridge stopped a motor car and was about to enter particulars when he was shot in the eyes, the murderers firing twice again while the policeman was on the ground. There are no clues as to the perpetrators.
