A second-class .assistant steward named B. 0. Symdns, aged 25, was missed from the Makura at sea on September 18th, states a Press message from Wellington. He was last seen at one o'clock in the morning, shortly after the Makura left Papeete.

Rome time after a train left Manakau at 3.5 a.m. on Saturday, a motorist noticed that the subway bridge uncle)' the line, opposite the dairy factory, was on fire. He gave the alarm to (lie factory manager, Mr Brown, who secured the aid of his neighbours, Mr and Mrs Willis. The party worked strenuously with axes and buckets, and by 5 o'clock the outbreak was extinguished without serious damage to the structure. A portion of the decking had to be chopped away, but traffic was not interfered with. The fire was probably due to hot ashes or cinders falling from the engine, and it was lucky that a car happened to be passing at such an early hour of the morning, as the chances were that the bridge would have been partly destroyed before the outbreak was noticed.

The monthly meeting of the Levin branch of the Women's Institute was held on Tuesday afternoon. After half-an-hour's general business meeting and the roll call, which each member answered with a home remedy, a dainty afternoon tea was provided by the hostesses, M'esdames F. Pink and J. Connor. The tea was served on trays and in cake baskets made by the hostesses, who very willingly explained the method of working these beautiful articles to the admiring members.

To-day is Dominion Day, and is observed as a bank and legal holiday, abthough it is no general holiday. It is the day which commemorates the proclamation issued in 1907 that "His Majesty the King is graciously pleased to change the style and designation of the 'Colony of New Zealand' to the 'Dominion of New Zealand.' " From the early days of settlement until 1841 New Zealand remained a 'dependency of New South Wales, subsequently being created a separate colony by Eoyal Charter. Although this Charter was dated November 16, 1840, the change did not take effect until May 3, 1841.

At sunset to-day begins the Jewish New Year. The year is luni-solar, and, according to whether it is ordinary or embolismic, consists of twelve or thirteen, months and of 354 or of 384 days. A special mail bag is made up once a month in London for a Levin business man. This is surely a distinction and one naturally looks for the reason. The direct mails are being used more and more, for the quick despatch of magazines and periodicals, so that the London postal officials have found it expedient to sort a special bag for Mr A. H. Maclean once a month. These magazines :go to regular subscribers only, casual purchasers having to wait for the New Zealand releases, but the fact that the postal authorities-have seen lit, on their own initiative, to supply and sort this special bag speaks for the increased regular magazine trade and the eagerness of the public for early delivery.
