BOXERS AT VARIANCE
question of a referee. (By Telegraph —Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Dec. 18. In connection with Purdy’s reported withdrawal from the Palmerston North bout with Trowern, the former stated this morning that it was incorrect. The fight was to be for the lightweight title. They had signed to box with a limit, and when the title was given to the Manawatu Association Trowern could not make a 9.9 limit essential. Purdy declares that he withdrew because of the objection to Mr G. Watchoru, of Palmerston North, as referee. He asked'for Earl Stewart, of Wellington, or O’Leary, cf Hastings, and would fight. Trowern anywhere under a referee other than 'Watchorn.
