AUSTRALIAN'S EMPTY NORTH.

PLANS TO DEVELOP THE TERRITORY. (Received This Day, 12.40 p.iu.) ■MELBOURNE, August 14. The report of Sir George Buchanan upon his investigations with a . view to the development of the Northern Territory, has been tabled m the House of Representatives. It advocates the construction of railways to link up with Queensland and thence from Camooweal with the New South Wales lines at Bourke, thus bringing Darwin into direct oom- ■ munication with Sydney. Such lines would be valuable for defence. Sir George Buchanan suggests the imme diate commencement of the work and also the improvement of Port Darwin. The future of the Territory depends largely on the proper development of the pastoral industry. The climate is trying for whites, but could he made suitable for them within certain limits. Closer settlement within the'coastal area would probably prove disastrous. The report stresses the point that all questions connected with the territory should be kept out of the political arena and that all should work together for its development.
