HIGHWAYS BOARD OR COUNTY? (Rer Press Association.) 'PALMERSTON N.. July 17. Has a local body power to close a road apart from Hie main highways to heayy traffic, was a question asked of the chairman, of the No. 9 District Highways Council (Mr J. Han-, nab) at the annual meeting at Palmerston North yesterday. The contentious question as to where Ideal bodies stand in the matter since the advent of the main highway regulations aroused an animated but rather fruitless discussion. The chairman; “There you have me. The question has aroused a deal of attention lately and the lawyers are tangled up over it.” . Mr Drew said certain roads in the Manawatu County, apart from a Main Highways, had been closed to heavy traffic because they were simply being “cut to pieces.” Now the lorry owners said the County Council had no authority to close sudi roads It was essential that local bodies should ascertain where they stood in the matter. After further discussion the chair man said' it was really a County matter. ‘‘We must, I thmty, leave it at that.”
