BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting of ■' e Borough Council* was held on : mulay. Present; The Mayor (Mr D. V. Matheson) in the chair; Crs. P. \V. (. lidsmith, C. H. Martin, A. Morten.•■'■u, W. Thomson. R. McAllister, J. I arvey and C. S. Keedwell. Cr, Parker* was granted leave of abs', uco. OVERSEER’S REPORT. Mr H. Channings reported:— Thought there has been a good deal i ‘ bad weather, good progress has b en made. ■ I have nearly finished II o formation of the footpath in Cambridge Street, and have put on a I' dit coat of tar on about U chains. ’> -its coat will keep the weeds down ami make a good foundation for the 1: avier coat in the summer. When the weather was not suitable for foration we made culverts and trimmed grass off the footpath in Queen SU-eet from Salisbury Street to Nel- ;■ m Street. We have also done some patching, and cleaned up the bicycle h ick from the station to Bath Street.

Fire Plug Indicators— I have put in i: w peg indicators in the most thick!■ p pulated parts of the borough. There me quite a number in (he oilier parts with the paint washed off (about liO). ’1 !iese either want new peg indicators i.■•!• the old discs repainted, but I have It it. them until the Council decides vmat to do.

As I have just about finished the path in Cambridge Street, I think it w mid be advisable to shift the culvert across Cambridge Street, so as p. be in a direct line with, the drain. At the present time there are two i ;'ht angles, and the drain along the footpath for about half a chain, a id is about two feet deep at this place. Attached is a sketch showing, the present position, and the propose I altefation. There is also another small matter that I think ought to be put in order, 'liiere is a water pipe on the reserve a) Weraroa that causes a bit of (rouble owing to the children turning it on. I have plugged it up in the jiast, but the plug has been removed, and as the water is wanted for stock grazing on the reserve, we cannot cut it off altogether. I would suggest that a small concrete trough be put in with a ball tap so carried over that the children could not get at It.

The report was referred to the various committees concerned.
