WERAROA WIN CUP.

END OF HOCKEY COMPETITION

In a howling gale, on a ground saturated with the heavy rain, the final match for Hie hockey championship of 1921 was played at the Domain yesterday in the presence of a fair attendance of the public. The Excelsior Club, which has held the Green Cup for the past two years, finished up the season on a level with the new Weraroa Club, composed of colts and footballers in equal parts, and yesterday’s match was the decisive one. Though both sides were very keen, it was played in excellent spirit, but was disfigured by a good deal of off-side play, chiefly on the part of Weraroa, and a great deal too much obstruction, for which both teams were to blame. The game resulted in a win for Weraroa by 2 goals to 1. For a young team they have done well, and their keenness has had its reward. Playing against the wind, Excelsior had all the best of the first spell, but their work Jacked the finishing touches, and w T hen they got into the circle they either lost the ball or missed fhe net. Every time Weraroa brolm away they were dangerous, through the hard hitting of the forwards when they got into the circle. Bob George scored for them in the first spell. Play was more even in the second half. Pink evened matters up by registering Excelsior’s first goal. A hard struggle followed, and towards the end of the game Wilson scored the winning goal- for Weraroa. Messrs. Nicolson, and Noble, of Otaki, refereed, and gave geenral satisfaction.' The Association is indebted to them for consenting to take the match.
