A Musical Epoch.
1 THE CHEJKNIAVSKTS' CONCERT IN LEVIIV. The Cheriavskyts' visit to Levin, on Wednesday night, forms a 'musical epoch for local reckoning. The word genius is properly used to describe these young men: they are fiili of fiery verve when the occasion needs, eoft as a Nov ember morning when some crooning passage of musical description requires illustration, and Frequently inspired with an elan of combined attack that makes their concerted pieces characteristic of themselves as well as being true to the composers' ideas. To touch seriatim upon their performance of last night would require more time and gi eater space than could be spared today, but we can say unreserved that Levin has had the pleasure and protit of listening to a trio of finished artists whose place in the world of musical achievement is set high and permanent. The pianist (Jan G'herniavtiky) perhaps is the outstanding genius of the trio: he has such masterly attack and such powers to wheedle or to compel by turns hie instrument to his will that the great range of the keyboard seems insufficient to display his full powers. The violinist (Leo) makes his violin vibrate with the personal magnetism that differentiates the ordinary player's efforts from those of the artist. He caresses and compels his instrument by turns. Mischel Cherniavsky. the youngest of the three boys, plays the 'cello in such manner that the sweetness of the violin is exceeded in the 'cello's tones. His every piece was superbly played, but the dreamy, soothing qualities that marked his notes as played in Schnniliian's Slumber Song (given as his encon- number) proved him an absolute master of 'his difficult instrument.
