PEDESTRIAN ZONES

Markings at Street Intersections AUTHORISED BY COUNCIL The marking-out of nearly 40 pedestrian safety zones, of which 27 will be in Heretaunga street between Willowpark road and Nelson street, was authorised at the meeting of the Hastings Borough Council last evening. This work will be an extension of the scheme adopted of marking-out areas near the various schools in the borough. Acting on the instructions of the traffic committee, the borough traffic inspector, Mr A. C. Crawford, listed the following intersections with Heretaunga street on which he considered pedestrian crossing should be marked off:—

Willowpark road —1 crossing. Miller street —1 crossing (Catholic Church). Hastings street —2 crossings. Warren street—4 crossings. Karamu road—4 crossings. Russell street —3 crossings. Railway road—2 crossings. Market street —4 crossings. King street—4 crossings.

Nelson street —2 crossings. Corner Queen street and Karamu road—l crossing. Corner Quesn street and Russell street —2 crossings. . Corner Eastbourne street and Russell

street —1 crossing (Mothers’ Rest)

The following corners have already been marked out:—Corner Southampton street and Karamu road, 2 crossings; corner Southampton street and Warren street, 1 crossing; corner Tomoana road and Frederick street, 1 crossing; corner Seiwood road and St. Aubyn street, 1 crossing; corner, Sclwood road and Heretaunga street, 1 crossing.

On the recommendation of the traffic committee, the council approved the list, with the addition of safety-zone lines at the tforner of Karamu road and St. Aubyn street.
