LOCAL-BODY WORKERS
Hastings Council Cited for Two Awards PECULIAR POSITION The Hastings Borough Council finds itself in the peculiar position of being cited as respondent in two applications for awards covering its outside staff. When the council was advised last night by letter from the Clerk of Awards that it, together with all local bodies outside the four chief centres, had been cited as respondent in the application, to be heard at Wellington, for an award covering the New Zealand Federation of Local Bodies’ Labourers’, Builders’ and General Labourers’ Industrial Association of Workers, the town clerk, Mr Noel C. Harding, reported that the council had already been cited, together with other local bodies in the district, in the Hawke’s Bay General Labourers’ Award.
“Inquiries have been made as to whether it is proposed to remove local bodies from the Hawke’s Bay award and leave them in the proposed New Zealand'award,” he said. “It appears probable that local bodies will be removed from the local award, in which case representations should be made to the Municipal Association regarding the appointment of the seven l assessors allowed to local bodies for the hearing of the dispute. Representation from Hawke’s Bay might' be considered necessary.”. On the recommendation of the finance committee it was decided that the mat*" ter should be held over until a final decision had been reached as to which award the council was to remain in, and that on receipt of this information ade- u quate representation should be arranged through the Municipal Association executive.
