DIOCESAN MOTHERS’ UNION FESTIVAL
The Diocesan Mothers’ Union Festival was held at St. Matthew’s Church, Hastings, on Tuesday. The vicar, Canon C. Mortimer-Jones, took the service, and was assisted by the Rev. H. Blathwayt, vicar of Takapau, and the Rev. R, T. Hall, vicar of Otane, read the lessonsi The sermon was preached by Canon C. Mortimer-Jones, who took his text from the Book of Philippiaus, Verse 10, “That ye may approve things that are' excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence. ’ ’ The canon also quoted from a letter sent by the Rev. Studdert Kennedy from France to his wife, giving her advice for training their son’s character. About 300 people were present at the service, including the Rt. Rev. H. W. Williams, Bishop of Waiapu, and Mrs Williams. At the conclusion of the service some very beautiful solos were sung by Mrs Spinney, who was accompanied on the organ by Mr C. B. (Spinney organist of St. Matthew’s. Afternoon tea was dispensed under the lovely shaded trees in the vicarage garden, where a delightful time was spent, and old and new friends met and chatted. The guests were received by Mrs M. T. de Lisle, president of the St. Matthew’s Mothers’ Union, the secretary, Mrs G. G. MacKechnie, and -Mrs Mortimer-Jones.
