SUCCESSFUL YEAR

Waipukurau A. and P. Association ANNUAL MEETING HELD From Our Own Correspondent. WAIPUKURAU, September 7. The annual meeting of the Waipukurau A, and P. Association was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall to-night, Mr J. D. Ormond, jnr., presiding over a large attendance of members. The treasurer, Mr R. P. Wilder, commenting on the balance sheet, said that although the gate money for Show Day was some £6O less than the previous year the association had come out without loss. He moved a special vote of thanks to the secretary, Mr G. Reg, Cook, and his wife. Mr F, J. Dunbar endorsed his remarks, moving a vote of thanks to the committee.

The weather affected the attendance at. the show and gymkhana, making the takings £52 less than estimated. The work of various committees made it possible, however, to show a- small profit on the year’s working. There was a- satisfactory net increase in membership of 25. The ball held to help compensate for the.loss on show day was a success, and may become an annual function. Special thanks are extended to the ladies responsible for supper arrangements, and to Miss A. Wilder, honorary ball secretary. The sub-committees reported as follows :— HORSE SECTION. The result of the horse section at the show is considered highly satisfactory. Entries ranged from three to 21, being an average of 12.928 in each class against an estimated average of 12.928, which compares slightly less favourably with last year’s average of 13 in each class, ranging from seven to 23. The falling off in the number of best child riders accounts for this smaller average. The novelty events were poorly supported, there being an average entry of eight in each of the two classes held, against an estimated average entry of 13 last year, due to bad weather on show day. SHEEP SECTION. The sheep section brought forth 120 entries against an estimated total of 97, representing an average of 9.23 in each class against an estimated average of 8.08. WOOL SECTION. As a new departure this year, the wool section created considerable interest as well as the amateur wool judging class, for which Mr R. Davey was largely responsible. DOG TRIALS. In the dog trials section, the entries were not as high as expected. GREYHOUND RACING. The sub-committee for greyhound and tin hare racing reported that this was an outstanding success. Thanks were given to the Dannevirke Greyhound Racing Club for loaning its plant and equipment. AXEMEN’S SECTION. The axemen’s carnival was very satisfactory, the number of competitors being 43 against 40 last year, Mr W. E. Jones, National Park, won the 12 inch standing chop championship of New Zealand for 1936. The sub-com-mittee thanked the officials of the Hawke’s Bay Centre of the N.Z, Athletic, Cycling and Axemen’s Union, and members of the surrounding clubs for assistanco in conducting these events. BOYS’ BOXING. As a result of bad weather it was not possible to stage the boys’ boxing bouts as arranged. 'Hie committee thanked Mr Sutherland for donating a silver cup for most points in the local class. This was won by Miss Jean Johnston. ATHLETICS. The children's athletic committee reported that no events were held owing to bad weather. INDUSTRIAL SECTIONS. The association thanked the women’s institutes which brought the cooking sections before their members’ notice, resulting in the total number of entries exceeding tile previous year’s by over 60. The Central Hawke’s Bay Electric Power Board was thanked lor its generous support of the electrical cooking section, although the entries were lower than usual. HANDCRAFTS. lu the handcrafts section, the committee was of the opinion that thriftweek competition was not in such demand as it used to he, judging from the. inquiries for a better class cf needlework; but tho classes in the Sanatorium Section were well received, and the standard of work was so high generally, that tho judge donated two special prizes. In the collective class there were fewer entries, but tho class created great public interest, SCHOOL SECTION. ■ lu the school section the- committee i reported that considerably more sup- : port had been received, and 'hanked ; the officials of the Teachers’ Institute . for bringing the matter before teachers j 'ji the district. 1 OFFICERS ELECTED. The association agreed that an Ormond Cup contest be staged between the school team holding the cup on the date of the show and another such team to be arranged; or, as an alternative, a number of bouts be held between visiting boys. It was strongly recommended that all endeavours should bo made to arrange a local team to contest the cup. The training of a suitable team is to be left in the hands of Messrs G. Gibson and A. Smales. The greyhound and tin hare, racing section accepted the offer of tho Dannevirke Greyhound Racing Club to supply the necessary plant to conduct the events on show day for the sum of three guineas travelling expenses. It was decided to call tenders from local builders for re-railing, with timber donated by Mr E. Gilbertson, the first square of 80 pens, which are to be subdivided by sliding gates. The president accepted with thanks the donation of a silver cup by Mr L. R, Grant. MEASURING- STAND. It was recommended that a properly constructed measuring stand be erected at the showground as a permanent fixture, complete with measuring rods, subject to the approval of the Waipukurau Jockey Club. Special consideration is to be given also to the placing of the ring for the horse section, this being too far away from the general public last year. Changes were approved in the novelty event section. In the sheep section a recommendation was passed that buyers for the works concerned be invited to take charge of the exports classes on show day. Prize money and entry fees will remain unchanged.

Mr H. Guilliard offered a special cup for the dog trials section to bo allotted as desired by the committee.
