PAKOWHAI GROUP

The Pakowhai Women’s Institute held their September meeting in the Church Hall, Mrs Parker presiding over a good attendance of members. The meeting was opened by the singing of the “Greeting Song,” followed by the creed, after which the president welcomed one new member and several visitors. The motto for the month was. “A good laugh is sunshine in the home.”

After the business had been dealt with, Mr Hunter, Havelock North, gave a very instructive talk on bulbs, with the aid of several fine specimens ot daffodils. Mrs C. Brunton and Mrs A. Fourncau were appointed delegates to the Federation meeting early in November. The junior members entertained by Miss B .Weaver singing two songs, Mrs Holmes acting as accompaniste, and Misses Howard and Parker, duets, accompanied by Miss Mary White.

Miss Patrick ably demonstrated smocking aud Airs and Miss Otene macramo weaving, each demonstration being closely followed by ibo members. Mrs 11. Russell won thu cushion competition, and Miss Howard a competition, the prize for which was a box of mushrooms, kindly donated by Mrs Walters. After some discussion, it was decided to form a garden circle. A hearty vote- ol tlianns was passed to Mr Hunter and the demonstrators Mrs Sissons, Mahora South, sent along for exhibition several articles made from sheep’s fleece, hand-spun and hand-knitted, one having a silk'

thread added, and these were much admired.

The competition for thrift articles resulted: Miss Moore (rug from sugar bags) 1, Mrs Russell (bag from old felt hats) 2, -Mrs Mitchell (child’s dress from flour bags) 3. In the best bloom competition (two spring bulbs) there were 33 entries: Mrs Brunton 1, Mrs Waters 2, Miss Howard 3, Mrs Waters v.h.c., Mrs Mitchell h.c. Mrs Lowe read the financial report of the recent concert, the result being very satisfactory.

Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Marsh, McDonald, Melling, Menzies, Morley and Mullacrane.

The singing of the National Anthem brought the meeting to a close.
