OPENED TO-DAY Important Gathering In Hastings LUNCHEON TO MINISTER The forty-second annual National Dairy Conference opened in the Hastings Municipal Theatre this afternoon, and was presided over by Mr. A. Morton, of Taranaki, president. A civic welcome to the delegatee and visitors, who number between 400 and 500, was extended by the Mayor, Mr. G. A. Maddison, and the ceremony of opening the conference was performed by the Hon. W. Nash, Minister of Finance and Marketing.

A complimentary luncheon was tendered to the Minister, to the members of th# conference executive, and to representatives of various local bodies, by the Mayor and councillors to-day. Mr. Nash gave an address at the luncheon, besides making an address in opening the conference. Owing to the elimination of the nd dress by the Hon. W. Lee Martin, Min ister of Agriculture, who was to have opened the conference but was unable to be present, the address to have been given to-morrow afternoon by Mr W. H.

Cunningham, solicitor to the association, wna set down for this afternoon. Mr A. Morton, president of the confer ence, stated this morning that the proceedings had in various ways been shortened, and it now appeared likely that the business of the conference would be concluded by to morrow afternoon instead of at noon on Friday. TO-MORROW’S PROGRAMME The following is the programme for Borrow:— 9.30 a.m.; Continuation of the confer •nee in the Municipal Theatre. 10.30 a.m.: Address by Dr. E. Ma'sden, secretary to the Department cl Scientific and Industrial Research. 11.30 a.m.: Address by Mr W. M. Singleton, Director of the Dairy Division, Department of Agriculture. 12.30 p.m.; Luncheon adjournment 2.0 p.m.; Discussion of insurantischeme for the dairy industry. 8.0 p.m.; Annual meeting of the N.Z. Producers’ Co-operative Marketing Association, Ltd., in the Council Chambers.
