MID-WEEK HOCKEY

United Retain Banner HUIA’S CHALLENGE FAILS The sixth round of matches in the Hawke’s Bay Hockey Association’s mid week competitions were played yesterday in fine but cold weather. All grounds were in good order and a large crowd of spectators viewed the various matches. The principal attraction of ths day was the Huia and United White match for th H.B.H.A. Banner. It was anybody’s game from the start and though United White were successful in retaining the trophy a win to Huia would have been justified on the run of play. Huia excelled with their «eaii, short, snappy stickwork in direct contrast to their .opponents’ dour hard hitting type of hockey. It was only the solid, experienced defence of United White that gave them victory in probably the best club match played here in the last three seasons. United Gold were successful against Pirates in a really good clean open game in which the more finished work of the Golds’ forward line gave them the winning band. In the Waiuiurania Karori match the seaside team gave a much improved display and recorded their first win of the season. Karori played two short and the extra work thrown on their defence proved too great a handicap. The Pirates v. United Blue junior match played as a curtain-raiser to the above game resulted in a win for the latter team. Results were as follow&fSENIOR. United White (holders) 3 (O'Neill, AlcNab and Dunn) v. Huia (challengers) 2 (Tau Hemapo and Rogers).— ■Referees, Alessrs. Alardon and Senior. United Gohl 2 (Thompson and Dower) v. Pirates O.—Referees, Messrs Senior and AlcNab, Wairuarama 4 (McKay 3, August 1) v. Karori 2 (Rouse and Shukar).— Referees, Messrs. AlcDonald and Parkhill. . JUNIOR GRADE. Piral's 3 v. Fulled Blue 6.
