WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

Kereru’s Sixth Birthday The Kercru Women's Institute celebrated its sixth birthday in the district hall on Saturday last. After the Institute Song and Creed, Mrs C. G. Averill extended a hearty welcome to the visitors, the guests of honour being members of the Hastings Townswomen's Guild. There were also present members of the Popotangi Defence Rifle Club and visitors from Marackakaho and Tikokino institutes. Members of the musical, literary and drama circles of the Hastings Townswomen’s Guild presented a most . enjoyable and varied programme, which was thoroughly appreciated. Two beautiful birthday cakes were cut at afternoon tea. The Institute cake, made and presented by Miss Anderson, was cut by Mrs J. Graham. The Rifle Club cake, presented by Air Nelson Smith, was cut by the club patroness, Miss Anderson. The Institute competition, "An Article made from Ribbon,” was judged by Mrs Bates, who awarded first prize to Mrs R. Brimer, second to Mrs L. R. Averill and third to Mrs C. G. Averill. The "best bloom” competition was judged by Mrs J. Graham, who awarded first place to Miss Anderson, second to Mrs G. G. Averill and third to Mrs L. R. Averill. A special prize, given by Mrs L. R. Averill for the liest Plunket singlet, was won by Mrs W. A. Whyte. The singlets were judged by Mrs E. V. Simpson. Thus ended a very happy birthday and the annual prize giving of the Rifle Club took place. Rissington Group The Rissington Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting, the president. Mrs Mines, presiding. Mrs Alines was appointed a delegate to attend the annual Dominion conference to be held in Dunedin in July. One item on the programme was a British-Islo afternoon, and some members dressed up in becoming old-fash-ioned dresses. One member wore a dress of the time of Queen Victoria’s accession to the Throne. Another had a dress of printed sateen over 56 years old, made from the first figured sateens to come to the Dominion. The best bloom competition resulted; Mrs McLean 1.

Pakowhai’s Birthday

The June meeting of the Pakowhai Women s Institute was held in the Church Hall on Thursday last, Mrs Parker presiding over a good attendance of members, also visitors from Havelock North, Richmond Block and Meeanee Institutes. The meeting opened with the singing of the Institute Song, followed by the Creed. There was a fine collection of members’ work displayed round the hall, and the new president’s tablecloth was also on view. Members considered the combining of the Institute, local school and church in providing social evenings throughout the winter and three members were appointed to interview the school committee on the matter. Arrangements are well in hand for the Institute birthday evening, and Mr Lew .Munro is to be pianist for the occasion. During the afternoon presentations were made to two members who are leaving the district. Airs Harris, a dainty posy, and Miss Harris, who is shortly to be married, an Institute sugar spoon. Airs Bond, of Havelock North, gave a very delightful talk on Edward Grieg and items by the same composer were capably rendered. During the talk solos by Airs Alay accompanied by Airs Blair, piano solos by Airs Blair and duets by Airs Bond and Airs Blair. Quite a good collection of articles, “Something New from Something Old” were brought along, aud will bo forwarded to the 11.8. Children’s Home, this being the Institute’s annual birthday gilt to the Homo. A bring and buy for the S.P.C.A. was well patronised. There was a short gardening talk by Airs Bartie. The Institute’s fifth birthday cake was made by Airs Boshier and iced by Miss P. Boshier, in the Institute’s colours, pink and green. Airs Harris blew the candles out and Airs Boshier cut the cake, after which members proceeded to sample it. The competition for the best bloom resulted Airs Russell 1, Airs. Lowe 2, Mrs Bartie and Airs Houston 3. Vegetable spray: Mrs Alitchell 1, Airs Couch 2. Aliss Dickersan 3. During afternoon tea a game “Find Airs X” was played, and proved very popular. Aliss Pedersen was the winner. Aliss Dewson gave a very enjoyable elocutionary item, and had to respond to an encore. Tho Institute programmes are now obtainable from the treasurer. Afternoon tea was served by Alesdames J. Bartie. Clark, Cushing, W. Fourneau and Gledhill, Aliss B. Fourneau, and the committee. The meeting concluded with tho National Anthem.

BIRTHDAY PARTY

A very jolly and enjoyable birthday party was held in the Greenmeadows Hall on Friday evening. Aliss Kathleen Alexander was the guest o i honour. Dancing and games were arranged by the Alisses Robson, while .Mrs Robson supervised a sit-down supper. Bongs were sung by the Misses Bobson and Mr J. Afooney. A happy evening was brought to a close with community singing.
