Signor Mussolini Now Optimistic TALK WITH SCHUSCHNIGG (Received 8, 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, June 7. The Vienna correspondent of the London “Observer” says that Signor Mussolini and Hr. Schuschnigg had a two-hour conference. They referred to tho Italo-Austrian attitude to world problems, including possibilities arising from the forthcoming session of, the League of Nations and Austria’s action if Italy should bo forced from tho League owing to the maintenance of sanctions. However, Signor Mussolini, who, until now, had declared that continuance of sanctions would raise in urgent form tho question of Italy remaining at Geneva, appears to be optimistic regarding the League’s decision. Italo-Austrian relations with German}’ were also considered, hut rumours of Italian-German rapprochement were considered exaggerated. It is understood that Signor Mussolini and Dr. Schuschnigg agreed that restoration of the llapsburgs was at present inopportune. SANCTIONS TO END Expectations in British Circles LONDON, Juno 7. Sir Samuel Iloare’s appointment as First Lord of tho Admiralty is regarded by diplomats as heralding a significant change in the Government’s foreign policy. The “Daily Alail’s” political correspondent says: “It is believed that Sir Samuel Iloare’s return to office will see a speedy end to sanctions and a more determined effort to restore Anglo-Italian relations to their former friendly basis. Air Baldwin, in asking Sir Samuel to rejoin the Government, is understood to have assured him that it is intended as quickly as possible to remove all possibility of Anglo-Italian friction.”
