Reduction in Borough Rates Made COUNCIL MEETING From Our Own Correspondent. WAIPUKURAU, June 7. The Waipukufau Borough Council dealt with estimates for the 1936-37 year at its last meeting, and is able to reduce last year’s rates by threelarthings m the pound. The rates are now decreased from 10 5-Bd. to 9 7-Bd. in the £. Tlie total expenditure is estimated as £6936 18/7 which will give an estimated balance of £3O at the end of the year. . .ovision is made for meeting the position arising from the legislative enactment ot a forty-hour week, by allowing for an extra man in the outside staff. A sum of £l6OO has been set down lor tarsealing Racecourse road. Approximately £6OO is to be spent on much-needed improvement to the Municipal Theatre. A sum of £lOO is on tho schedule for river protection work, but until engineering authorities have examined the position the definite figure cannot be estimated. Provision is made for an increase of £25 to purchase books for the library. I lie annual grant of £l5 to the Waipukurau Town band may bo raised to £4O. There is an allowance for work on the camping ground, and a sum of £25 for improving street lighting, £10(1 towards purchase of tbo quarry site, and an allowance for finishing work on Kaymoiuid’s Cutting. 'lhe general rate this year will be 1 o-Bd. in the £. hospital rate u-Bd., and two loan conversions equalling 4 5-Bd. making a total of 9 7-Bd. COUNTY COUNCIL MELTS. The monthly meeting of the Waipukurau County Council was held yesterday. The chairman, Mr. A. C. Russell presided over Crs. W. T. Edgecombe, A W. Elliott, L. M. Monktou, M. Tansey and P. F. Wall. The clerkengineer, Mr. R. B. Price was also present. The council supported the resolution of the Tauranga County Council that if county employees are required to become members of a union, it should he different from other workers’ unions, embrace all, and only, county employees. SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Waipukurau District High School Committee was held in the primary school oh Friday. Mr. C. F. Haycock presided over Messrs. F. Sayliss, V. L. King, L. Benner, C. Cassidy, J. J. White, T. Spencer, and J. Blair. Tho headmaster, Mr. E. C. Boyes, was also present. The accounts for tho month amounted to £37 11/3. The headmaster Mr. E. C. Boyes in his report gave the primary roll as 360 and tho average attendance, 336. In the secondary department the roll is 68 (69) and the average attendance 65. Miss Doherty and Mr. G. Kedgeley have begun duty.
