Talk on Pioneer Women A good number of members attended the monthly meeting of the Methodist Ladies' Guild, when the Rev. R. B. Gosnell presided and welcomed new members and friends. Mrs. H. Lovell-ismith was present by invitation and gave a very interesting talk on ‘'Pioneer women I have known." She spoke at some length on the work done by the late Mrs. Kate Sheppard in conjunction with others in the campaign conducted by the W.C.T.U. in the effort to gain the suffrage for New Zealand women. She paid a great tribute to those woman who, on foot from door to door, secured 'signatures for the huge petitions which were presented time and again to Parliament. In tiinate and pleasing was the picture she portrayed ot the character and home lite of the late Mrs. E. R. McCombs, who had been a life-long friend of the speaker. In her role of homemaker she had had the larger vision of the civic and nation homemaker while serving as the first woman M.P. in New Zealand. Mrs. liovell-Smitb was accorded a very sincere vote of thanks for her address. and the hostess for afternoon tea, Mesdames Young, Smith and Farmery were also thanked. At the conclusion of the meeting arrangements were made lor a “stall” afternoon and evening to raise fbunds for new church hymn books. A committee was set up to meet on Monday afternoon, with Mrs. J. Garratt as convenor. The meeting closed with the Benediction.
