LAWN TENNIS DISPUTE

Allocation of Tourney PROTEST ENTERED By Telegraph—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, June 5. A formal protest to the council of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association against the allocation of the 1936-37 New Zealand championship tournament to Timaru will be made by the Canterbury Lawn Teunis Association. This decision was made at a meeting of the management committee to-day. The actual resolution was passed in committee, but in conveying the decision to the Press after the meeting the chairman described the action of the New Zealand Council as a “most unexpected'' development. It was stated in a later discussion that the Canterbury association had applied for the tourney, having previously been asked by the New Zealand council whether Canterbury agreed to hold the championships at Wilding Park on the usual terms. This the secretary regarded as an offer of the championships. Reference was made to a circular sent to all affiliated associations, which circular had, however, not been sent to Canterbury. Members agreed that Timaru had made the most of its case, and some said that things had been “exaggerated a bit.’’ A delegate asked: “What are the courts like}”

Mr Sheppard: Rotten. I don’t see how they can possibly hold the championships there. Later he said the courts were not in good order and that the seating accommodation was only temporary, consisting of boards.
