PERRY’S REMARKS
Wedlock Has Not Hampered Other Champions EXPERTS SURPRISED (Received 4, lo.ia t, m .) LONDON, Jun* J. ”It its extraordinary for Perry to say that,” said Mr A. 0. Cuehtnin. manager of the American Wight man Cup team at present in England, referring to the “ Dally Mall” interview.
He added: •' Marriage in the majority of cases provides a champion athlete with an additional impetus to win. I don’t know of a marriage whicE has been detrimental to a champion. Crawford and von Cramm, are both married and their command of the game has never been greater. Alligon has been married for some years, but hw high standard of tennis has not faltered.”
Tho secretary of a prominent athletic, club said that most managers regard marriage as beneficial, as the athlete’s home life is better regulated and hi# meals expertly supervised. Wifely care is more valuable in training a chant* pion than a mere manager’# nagging.”
“Tennis used to Ve my whole life, but now I am married I have other interests, and tenuis is only part of it. I have lost my interest and enthnsiMtn end cannot concentrate. That’s the plain truth,” said Perry In an inter* view with the “Daily Mail’s” parte correspondent.
Mrs Perry (Helen Vinson, the film actress) who watched the match, broke in, saying: “I do not think Fred is playing badly. I suppose it is good for him to lose sometimes. I am not worry* ing about losing tennis championships. It isn’t a catastrophe to me.” I “Of course it isn’t a catastrophe,” added Perry. “I expect I shall be playing better at Wimbledon, but, if I don’t, what of it? You can’t stay out of a game for seven month* and then expect to win championships as before. I even astonished myself by my lack of concentration and kick. Whether I ehall recover them or not remains to be seen.”
