TROOP MOVEMENTS
Disagreement Between Nanking and Canton
CIVIL WAR UNLIKELY
(Received 4, 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, June 3.
The sensational reports (see page 8) from tho Japanese Dornei news agency at Canton regarding the movements of Chinese troops are minimised by Chinese officials of that city. The Domel agency asserts that the Canton Government, which controls four of the southern provinces, is rushing 200,000 Kwantung and Kwangs: troops towards the Kwautung-Fukcin border, accompanied by scout planes and bombers.
Hunan troops occupied without opposition the cities of Yung Chow-fu and ichang, General Pai Chungh-si establishing his headquarters at Kwciling. Chinese authorities at Shanghai admit some disagreement, between Nanking and Canton, but regard a civil war as most unlikely, considering that the report is a smoke-screen for Japanese activities directed at the autonomy of Fukein. The Foreign Minister at Canton supports this view.
