RUMOUR DENIED
Dismissal of Workmen FROM COUNCIL STAFF A rumour to the effect that a number of men have been dismissed from the Borough Council staff has recently been in circulation, and was referred to-day to the Mayor, Mr. G. A. Maddison, for confirmation or otherwise. Mr. Maddison stated emphatically that there was no foundation at all for the rumour, which arose probably, he said, from the fact that a few men engaged on seasonal work had ended their temporary employment. There had been no dismissals from tho permanent staff of the council, either from the office staff or from outside workers, and it was not the council’* intention to dismiss anyone. In reference to the temporary workers, Mr. Maddison said it had been the council ’» practice for many years past to engage labourers for such work as pruning trees, eleaning eut drains, and so on. It was always understood that men employed for such purposes were only temporary employees, and that their employment ended when their tasks ended. That was all that had happened in respect of what he tops to ba th* foundation of th* •tory.
