WATER FOR MAREWA

Need of More Adequate Supply The necessity for a more adequate water supply to suit the growing needs »f the Marewa Block was tlie subject of a discussion arising from the report of the borough engineer, Mr W. D. Cor bett, at the meeting ■of the Naoier Borough Council last night. The situation, as explained iu tlie following extract from the engineer’s report, is to be dealt with by a joint committee oi the council and the Napier Harbour Board. Council members upon the committee have power to act subject to the approval of the Harbour Board Mr Corbett reported as follows.-— “With the keeu demand lor sections and the rapidity with which houses ar» being erected on the Marowa block, tna one-inch mains will shortly be overtaxad and wo shall have a demand for a better supply, and it will not bo long before we have a request for some firn protection. “Ln the vicinity of Kennedy road, where we have houses on both sides of the road and will shortly be offering sections on Nos. 7 and 8 streets, this question is a very important one. and the requirements of the area could easily be met tor some time ahead by a 6-inch main in Kennedy road. If this is laid in place of the present main, the one-inch pipe can be lifted and used for further reticulation in Nos. 7 and 8 streets or for extensions in i'aradale road. I estimate the cost of a G-inch main in Kenneuv load at £965 14/6 and would recommend that it be installed. “In Taradale road in particular, the line of houses is extending, and extensions of the present one-inch main arc found necessary from time to time to keep pace with the building operations. I would like authority to extend these small mains as required. “The same thing will apply also to the sections to be offered in 7 and 8 streets, and I would like authority to extend these mains as required, to supply water to sections for which building permits have actually been taken out.’’
