PARKVALE SCHOOL

Many Activities During Past Year COMMITTEE’S REPORT Commenting on the past year’s activities, the annual report of the Parkvale School Committee, to be presented at the meeting of householders next week, states that the staff has been fairly steady throughout the year. At the end of the second term Miss Allison left to take control of a sole-charge school near Dannevirke. while Mr. Bennett was attached to the relieving staff and given work in the country districts. Misses Lorrimer and Henton from Otago were attached to the staff in September. At the beginning of 1936 Miss Wyatt took Miss Allison’s place and Miss Flowers was on duty for the month only. During the year the attendance was fairly good, but the attendance could be much better if the parents made a greater effort for regularity,” says the report “The average roll for the year ending 1935 was 400, which was quite sufficient to keep the school in its present grade. “The annual parents’ day was a great success, the attendance of parents being a record. The folk-danc-iug, physical drill and singing were much appreciated. Mr. C. Lassen and the Mayoress, Mrs. G. A. Maddison, presented the various cups, trophies and merit cards won during the year. Mr. Lassen especially complimented all concerned upon the appearance of the grounds and the beautiful display of Howers in the gardens.

“The pupils did very good woik throughout the year, the reports from the Departmental Inspectors being of a very pleasing nature. The pupils sitting for proficiency gained a very high percentage. At the Hawke's Bay Spring Show, many awards were gained, especially in the drawing division, where some outstanding work was exhibited. “The annual school excursion was held on the Marine Parade, Napier, and was enjoyed by all,” the report adds. “Special thanks is due to the Napier Thirty Thousand Club, the Napier Borough Council, the parents and all others who contributed towards the entertainment of the children. T he committee especially thank the staff for their assistance on the train and in Napier. “The committee and teachers thank the parents for their assistance and co-operation during the past two years. Throughout the year the best feeling existed between' the committee and staff, and each in its way did its best to co-operate for ■ the benefit of the school. Mr. A. V. Stamp, who had been chairman for several years, was transferred to Wellington, and'we wish to place on record his good work over a period of somewhat trying years owing to frequent changes of staff. The committee thanks the secretary, Mr. J. Stickland, and the treasurer, Mr. H Cameron, for their work throughout the period. These officials do a vast amount of work unnoticed by the general public, and it is only fitting that they should receive many thanks for their voluntary efforts. “In conclusion the Education Board is deserving of thanks for its assistance. We know it has only a limited amount in hand lor all the schools of Hawke’s Bay and it does its best to give all their due. We would specially thank the two Hastings representatives, Mr. G. Maddison, chairman, and Mr. C. Lassen, for their interest taken in .the school, as shown by their visits on different occasions. Thanks is due to the Press for the publicity given to all matters concerning the welfare oi the schools.”
