SHIP IN A NORTHERLY

One Engine Out of Action SEVERE BUFFETING (By Telegraph—Press Association,) NEW PLYMOUTH, April 23. The coastal vessel Hauturn, en. route from Onehunga to New Plymouth, battled for five and a-quarter hours during last night’s storm with one of two engines out of action. The passage took 24 hours instead of the usual 16, and though tho vessel’s instruments told the officers they were near the coast they did not sight land for the major portion of the voyage, visibility being nil. Tho Hauturn left Manukau yesterday. moderate westerly weather, but in a few hours it changed to a northerly gale. The Hauturu, which has made many rough passages, was making fair progress in an awkward sea when one engine broke down completely, leaving her in danger of swamping from huge following seas. The other engine was nursed while the whole engine-room crew laboured to repair the disabled unit. Iho task took five and a-quarter hours. All this. time the Hauturu, with just a margin of way on to keep from broaching, was pounded by heavy seas, many sweeping across the low decks. The voyage uas one of the roughest experienced.
