WAIPUKURAU NEWS

House Numbers and Street Signs IMPROVEMENT PROPOSED From Our Own Correspondent WAIPUKURAU, April 22. At a recent meeting of the Waipukurau Borough Council attention was drawn to the need for numbering houses and erecting street signs in the borough. It was agreed that an estimate of the cost be prepared and placed before the council at its next meeting. Such a move is a beginning to an 1 improvement which has been much looked for by a number of the residents of Waipukurau, and has been the cause of much controversy and consideration. There are many people in Waipukurau who could not name and place all the streets and so the position of a stranger to Waipukurau endeavouring to find a certain house is homewhat hopeless without having to inquire from a number of people. “I know of no town in the Dominion of equivalent size which is so badly served in this respect, was the comment of one resident to the “Herald.” “The cost of carrying out such a work would be slight and the benefits considerable. If the council, despite its large credit for the year just ended, was unable to bear the cost it might be possible, as has been suggested, for the residents themselves to pay for the numbering of their houses.” On the Tavistoek Hotel corner Is a single much-rusted sign on which can be faintly read the words, “Ruataniwha Street.” There are a few more signs scattered around the town, but throughout the borough area the posting is negligible. Recently the Automobile Association (H. 8. sign-posted the roads leading out of the town, and erected several other road-signs pointing out various dangerous crossings in the town area. If the Borough Council followed the Automobile Association’s steps and erected street-name plates it is thought that the venture would prove even more successful and beneficial. Consequently, it is hoped that the Borough Council will decide upon some definite move towards the numbering of houses and erection of street signs at their next monthly meeting.

A very pleasant surprise party was held at the residence of Mrs T. Balfour, Wilder Settlement, Porangahau, last week, on the occasion of the coming-of-age of her son George. At supper-time, Mr Balfour was made the recipient of a leather wallet as a small gift from those present, who included most of the settlers in the neighbourhood.

Five babies were born at Rathbone Maternity Home, Waipawa, during April, stated the acting-matron, Miss M. Gordon, in a report presented to the Waipawa Hospital Board to-day.

Sister Grace Reid, senior sister at the Pukeora Sanatorium, was appointed to the position of sub-matron, at yesterday’s meeting of the Waipawa Hos pital Board.
