Bry?o (Napier) Wins After Play-Off JOHNSON RUNNER-UP The Hawke’s Bay Bowling Centre’s champion of champions singles competition was played on the Port Ahuriri Bowling Club’s green and resulted in a win for A. Bryan, of the Napier Club, after playing off a tie' with Johnson, of Port Ahurirl. At the conclusion of the day’s play, the president of the Centre, Mr A. W. Simpson, in handing over the handsome silver • cup donated by Messrs Smith Bros., congratulated the winner on his meritorious win, and the runner-up on his performance. Ho also thanked the Port Ahuriri club for the use of their green, the ladies for providing light refreshments, and Mr F. D. Logan, the ground superintendent, for providing such an excellent playing surface in the face of adverse weather conditions. Cheers were given for the winner and runner-up, Mr Bryan suitably returning thanks for the hearty reception that had been given him on his win. During the contest some very remarkable finishes were witnessed, and the bowling generally was of a very high standard, and the best exhibition since the competition was inaugurated in 1929. THE NAPIER CLUB A glorious summer afternoon favoured bowlers on Saturday, and players spent many hours in genial companionship. Twenty players from the Napier Club paid a visit to Hastings Club, and the balance were “at home’’ to the Port bowlers. The Napier green was in very good order and the play always iueresting. The game between McLcay (Port; and Skoglund was notable for high scoring the Napier team registering heads of 5,4,3,6, while ’the Port also included a 4 and 3. A defeat by 30—16 against the Port was hardly a fair indication of the play. C. I’irie (Port) established an 8-point lead against Me Ghie. The Napier president’s four re-

dueed this, but he eventually had to submit to a 4-point defeat. Courtney (Port) gave his Easter rink a ‘ ‘ try-out ’ ’ against Burgess. The Port team led throughout, during which they collected heads of 5,3,3, in a total of 23. Burgess’ total of 17 included a 5 and 3. The Beer-Pirie game was a close contest up to the 18th head, when the first-named then established a lead that gave him victory by six points. In a pairs game Nuttal and O.
