GALATEA SUBDIVISIONS
Not on Market This Year LEGISLATION PENDING ' By leiegrapb-Press Association.) WELLINGTON, March 16. It is not now intended by the Government to place some of the subdivisions of the Galatea settlement on the market this season. The reasons for this decision were explained by the Minister of Lands, Hon. F. Langstone, in an interview. “Certainly,” said the Minister, “it was my intention last December when I inspected the settlement, to place some of the divisions on the market this season, but it has now beeu decided to bring down certain land legislation in time to give the future settlers a reasonabel start on their selection, and such legislation should in my opinion be on the Statute Book before any portion of Galatea is settled. It is not possible to pass such legislation in time to give the future settlers a reasonable start on their selections for the next dairying season. The new settlers would require to build houses and cow-sheds, and have their herds in readiness within a few months, and the winter time is not a good time for such work. “Really the settlers should be on these sections now, and by the time legislation is passed,, and the necessary formalities such as advertising are completed it would be much too late. It has therefore been decided that the sections will not be placed on the market till early next year. “I regret that this action is necessary. Numerous intending applicants will be disappointed, as I publicly stated that 25 sections would be ready for selection at the beginning of April next. Those settlers who are already in occupation of sections will get their sections allotted to them without going to a ballot, as this promise was given to them and will be adhered to.”
