LIGHT-HEAVY BOXING
Lewis Holds World Title ENGLISH CHALLENGER BEATEN (Received 16, 8.45 a.m.) NEW YORK, March 14. John Harvey Lewis, 12.4, world lightheavyweight champion, successfully defended the championship at Madison Square Garden, winning the decision over 15 rounds from Jock McAvoy, 12.0 J. According to newspapers and ringside observers, McAvoy won only ono of the 15 rounds, scoring at the end of the fourth when he took the offensive and lauded a series of hard punches to the negro champion’s face and head. During the remainder of the bout the heavier Lewis scored an impressive point margin by clever punching tactics and aggressive fighting. By the end of the ninth round Lewis had considerably weakened McAvoy, and from then on he tried desperately for a knock-out. The Englishman showed endurance, however, and fought gamely to the final bell, landing several effective punches in the final rounds, but in doing so lie absorbed much punishment. The decision of the referee and of the two .judges was unanimous. About 15,000 witnessed the bout,
