CHRISTIE CUP TENNIS

Hawke’s Bay Retains Trophy MATCH WITH WANGANUI (By “Service”) Played in ideal weather on the H.B. Lawn Tennis Club’s courts in Namier on Saturday, the inter-provincial tennis match between the Hawke’s Bay and Wanganui Lawn Tennis Associations resulted in a win for the home team by 16 matches to eight. The match was a challenge by Wanganui for the Christie Cup, which has been held by Hawke’s Bay since 1934. Notwithstanding the soaking which the courts received as a result of the heavy rain on Friday, they were in excellent playing condition by 11 o’clock on Saturday morning, and reflected great credit on the groundsman, Mr F. Several excellent matches were won by players who were well down after the first set, but the two outstanding cases were Bert Milburn in his match against Udy, and Sharpe and Mrs Cottorill in the combined doubles, against Udy and Miss Greaves. Milburn’s was a 'most meritorious win, but undoubtedly affected his play iu both doubles matches in the afternoon. Sharpe and Mrs Cotterill settled down to something like thetr usual combination after losing the first set, Sharpe’s passing side-line shots in particular being an important match-winning factor. Mark Lampe, the Wanganui veteran, is still playing fine tennis, and more than held his own in all matches. Cox and Udy, North Island men’s doubjes champions, were disappointing and were hard pushed by Milburn and Lowry. Miss Mary Pureel! gar# the impreslion of being Wanganui’* b*»t lady on

the day, her backhand in particular being a beautifully-played shot. Hawke's Bay’s No. 1 lady, Mrs Milburn, played her best tennis of the season to beat Miss Duncan easily in straight sets. She seemed to experience no difficulty with the heavy courts. Ferkins, as the first string of the Bay men, did well to beat Cox without the loss of a set, but one noticeable feature was the number of double-faults that crept into his game. His doubles game is undoubtedly overshadowed by his singles play. DINNER IN EVENING. After the matcjl the teams were the guests of the H.B. Lawn Tennis Association at a dinner. The Hawke’s Bay manager, Mr R. H. Milburn, and captain, Mr J. N. Lowry, welcomed the visitors, Mr M. L. Lampe replying on behalf of the Wanganui team. After the dinner several members of both teams were the guests of the management of the Joylands Cabaret.
