Elsthorpe Meeting

The monthly meeting of the Elsthorpe Women’s Institute was held in the hall on Thursday, Mrs Williams presiding over a good attendance. Three new members were enrolled. Being the annual meeting, the election of president and committee took place. Mrs Cyril Williams was returned unopposed as president for the seventh time. Mr« Alex Williams was elected secretary, Mrs Dillion treasurer, Mrs Miller and Mrs Elliott vice-presidents.

A vegetable stall for federation funds brought in a good amount and a “ bring-and-buy ” stall did good business.

Following are the results of the com petitions: Dahlias (3 distinct): Mrs Gilmore 1 and 3, Mrs Nielsson 2. Three Asters: Mrs J. Sutherland 1, Mrs W. Watson 2, Miss N. Dillon 3. Homemade soap: Mrs Sutherland 1, Mrs Lissette 2. Baby’s jacket (material): Mrs Watson 1, Miss B. Priest 2. Baby’s jacket (knitted): Mrs Nielsson I, Mrs W. Watson, jun., 2, Miss Priest 3, Mrs Sutherland 4, Mrs Lincoln and Miss Burling 5. Crochet beret: Miss J. Smith 1. Knitted beret: Miss Priest 1 and 3, Mrs Bawden 2, Mrs W. Watson, jun., 4, Miss Burling 5. A dainty afternoon tea and the singing of the National Anthem brought a very pleasant afternoon to a close. The secretary's report stated:

“We have much pleasure in presenting our sixth annual report. The membership for 1935 was 72 and all meetings have been well attended. In May we entertained our menfolk at our fifth birthday party, and in July we held a very successful dance, which considerably augmented our funds. Keen interest was taken in the flower show in November, which, despite the bad season, was a great success. Our children’s Christmas party in December was, as usual, enjoyed by all. 'Demonstrations during the year were:—Singer sewing machine, knitting wool from fleece, pine-needle baskets, folk-dancing and cake-icing. A debate “Should Husbands Help in the House.” caused much amusement and a talk on the League of Nations by Mr Harker, Waipawa, and another on a trip to Japan by Mrs Riddle were very much appre ria ted. Wo sent, a delegate to both the annual and half-yearly I’cdcratioa

meetings and to the annual Dominion Conference.

“Donations were made to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals 10/-, Mayor’s relief fund £l, Cancer Fund £2 2/3, 10/- each to the Dominion Federation and S.H.B. Federation and 30/- to the Children’s Home for wool for jumpers; £2 was spent on new books for the library. “We planted flowering gums in the school and church grounds. We held a ‘bring-and-buy’ for the Health Stamp campaign, one for the H.B. Children’s Home and one for Institute funds; 150 garments were sent to the Plunket Society and Children’s Homes, vegetables to the Good Cheer Depot and a Christmas cake to the Pukeora Sanatorium. The beach shop held in January was most successful £5 11/- being taken. “In conclusion, we wish to thank Mrs Watson, sen., for making the birthday cake, Mrs Lissettc for making a cake for the dance and the Sanatorium cake, members who helped with the beach shop, the Press correspondents, Miss Sutherland, librarian, Mrs Cheer, pianist, hostesses, delegates, Mr O’Dea for judging the cake icing and Mr Jas. Williams for auditing the books.’’
