Progress with Elimination STATEMENT ISSUED By Telegraph.—Press Association. WELLINGTON, March 13. A statement as to the progress on the elimination of dangerous level-crossings throughout New Zealand was made today by the Minister of Railways, tho Hon. D. G. Sullivan, in reply to Press criticism in Christchurch, which mentioned the programme of joint action discussed by the Main Highways Board, Railways Board and Unemployment Board last July, and voiced the hope that in the change of Administration Hie work would not drop out of view. In reply tho Minister said that 34 crossings were selected as requiring attention first, and of these 23 regarded as most urgent were approved for commencement of tho programme, it being considered that this portion of the programme would take approximately IS months to complete. ‘‘The position reached in respect of each of the 23 crossings is as follows," said tho Minister:— ‘‘Auckland district.—Hoteo, draft plans just completed, proposing road diversion eliminating two crossings instead of an overbridge eliminating one. Tirak, surveys in hand. Waihi, construction of overbridge in progress. Te Kauwhata, plans in hand. Huapai, plans in hand. Taupiri, plans in hand. Tarukenga, survey in hand. ‘‘Wanganui district.—Oio, Piriaka, Kai Iwi and Mokoia, plans in hand. Normanby, surveys in hand. ‘‘Wellington district.—Porirua, Paraparaumu, Longburn, field work in hand. Maharahara, plans prepared for road diversion. ‘ ‘ Christchurch district. —Styx, proposals practically complete and work should be advertised shortly. Sockburn, plans are well forward and proposals should be completed in the next three weeks. Brunner, small amount of field data required for completion of plans; steel has been ordered. “Dunedin district.—Deborah, subway to be provided; steel for overbridge has been ordered, and as soon as this comes to hand work can be commenced. Kartigi, ramp is in and bridge plans are well forward. Palmerston, survey in hand. ‘ ‘ Invercargill district.—Lorneville, plans are in course of preparation.”
