TRADE OF THE PORT
Ships and Their Cargoes
HARBOUR REVENUE An increase of £l4Bl is shown in the revenue earned by the wharfage and harbourmasters’ departments at the port of Napier during August, when compared with the same month of last year. The amount earned was £4378. For the eleven months of the current year the earnings totalled £63,308, against £59,819 for the same period last year.
In his report to the Napier Harbour Board, the secretary (Mr. J. P. Kenny) made the following statement regarding the revenue from these departments:— “The figures for the eleven months show an increase of £3489 when compared with the same period of last year, but when allowance is made for the increase of 1/- per ton which became operative as from November 1, 1934, and which was estimated to produce £693 monthly, we are £3441 short. Practically the whole of this shortage is accounted for by the shrinkage in primary produce shipments overseas and consequent loss in tonnage of overseas shipping.” The following is a comparative return for the shipping and the cargo handled during August and for August, 1934 :—
