The Rev Father Cahill, of Wellington, is visiting Napier.

The Rev. Father Stewart left Hastings last week for Nelson to visit his father, who is dangerously id.

Mr J. Williamson, chairman of the Taradale Town Board, who has been confined to his bed through illness for the last fortnight, is still indisposed.

Archbishop O’Shea, of Wellington, is on a short visit to Napier, and is the guest of Dean Holley, at the Catholic Presbytery.

Mr F. O. Main, at one time secretary of the Y.M.C.A. at Napier, will on Saturday be ordained a priest. The ordination service will be conducted by the Bishop of Christchurch, Dr. WestWatson, at St. Matthew’s Church, Christchurch. Mr Main was badly injured in the 1931 earthquake, and for some time suffered indifferent health, but in aTetter to Dean Brocklehurst he says he is quite recovered and enjoys very good health.

Mr Robert Bickerstaff, snr., who has been in the employ of the Napier Gas Co. for the long period of 52 years, has retired, and appreciation of his services was expressed in the following letter, which was accompanied by a substantial cheque from the company’s directors: “Members express keen appreciation of your loyal co-operation and consideration of the company’s interests during your long service of 52 years.’’ Mr Bickerstaff was also presented with an armchair by the employees, an accompanying letter assuring him of their goodwill and good wishes for his declining years.

Captain R. G. Briscoe, Conservative member of Parliament for Cambridgeshire since 1923, and a director of Briscoe and Company Limited, arrived by the Mataroa from London on a business visit to New Zealand. After two or three weeks in the Dominion he will proceed to Australia before returning to London. Prior to entering Parliament Captain Briscoe was an attache at the British Embassy in Berlin. From 1924 to 1925 he was Parliamentary secretary to Lord Moyne, then the Rt. Hon. Walter Guinness, who was Financial Secretary to the Treasury. He served in the same capacity from 1925 to 1929, when the Minister held the portfolio Of Agriculture.
