REPRESENTATIVE SOCCER

Poverty Bay Deteats H.B.

EAST COAST ROSEBOWL GAME

(By Telegraph—Special to “Tribune.”) GISBORNE, Sept. 15.

In a senior representative Soccer match on Saturday afternoon in Gisborne Poverty Bay retained the East Coast Rosebowl when they met and defeated the challengers, Hawke’s Bay, by five goals to two. Hawke’s Bay took the lead early in the first half, and Poverty Bay equalised soon after. The visitors again drew ahead, but Poverty Bay struck form in the latter part of the second spell and took the match in hand. The shooting of E. Bridge, a Poverty Bay forward, was a feature of the game, and he registered four of his side’s total of five goals. The two teams were very even, but the Poverty Bay forwards as a line were superior. The defence of the Hawke’s Bay full-backs and goalie was very sound. The teams were as follow: —Hawke’s Bay: H. Hawthorne, H. Henderson, G. Young, W. Collin, W. Bryan, and R. Wood: T. Durie, J. McCallum, J. Bradley, J. Neilson, and V. Edlin. Poverty Bay: T. Hill, R. Waugh and J. Dunstan; J. Crawford, P. Quinn, J. Jennings; R. Findlay, J. McLoughlan, E. Bridge, A. Waugh, and M. Callaghan.

Poverty Bay won the toss, and soon after they had kicked off Hill was called on to save, when the Hawke’s Bay forwards attacked strongly. At this stage two players, Neilson and B Waugh, collided, and the latter left the field temporarily. On tho resumption ol play Hawke’s Bay attacked once more, and when Hill left his gOal-mouth to clear a loose ball he was beaten to it by V. Edlin, who opened the Hawke ’a Bay scoring account with a quick goal— Hawke’s Bav 1, Poverty Boy nil.

The Poverty Bay forwards pressed strongly, b..t ’ soon after, when Me-

Loughlan made a good shot, the Hawke’s Bay goalie made a brilliant save. Poverty Bay were put on defence by Edlin, but his shot was cleared by Hill. Poverty Bay then put the visitors on defence, but the Hawke's Bay backs were playing very soundly and saved repeatedly. A sparkling run by Bridge saw him take the ball half the length of the field, beat the Hawke’s Bay defence, and lodge a nice ball in the net to equalise. Hawke’s Bay 1, Poverty Bay 1.

Poverty Bay made a strong attack on the resumuption of play, and, when A. Waugh shot, the ball was cleared well by Hawthorne, and G. Young, the left full-back, made a good clearing kick. The Hawke’s Bay centre, McCallum, broke away soon after and put his side in the lead with a good goal—Hawke’s Bay 2, Poverty Bay 1. This was the half-time score.

Poverty Bay pressed when play resumed, and a shot by Bridge was saved by the Hawke’s Bay goalie. A run by Callaghan in the next few seconds saw him centre to Bridge. The latter’s shot was stopped by the Hawke’s Bay goalie, but he kept Hawthorne bustled and flicked the ball into the net for his second goal, to equalise once more— Hawke’s Bay 2, Poverty Bay 2. Poverty' Bay pressed strongly, but the defensive work of the Hawke’s Bay full-backs was safe. Another run by McLoughlan put Hawke’s Bay on defence, but Neilson cleared and play continued in the midfield. The Hawke’s Bay forwards took up the attack, but R. Waugh cleared and the ball was taken upfield by Crawford. Edlin took the ball down the left wing and a smart cross was nicely saved by Hill in the Poverty Bay goal. From then the ball was gradually worked up the field into the Hawke’s Bay territory. A. Waugh received the ball and sent it out to Callaghan on the wing. Callaghan shot, but the ball slipped out of Haw'thorne’s hands after he had made a good save, and Bridge scored again to put Poverty Bay ahead. After the kick-off, a short spell of mid-field play' followed, and then A. Waugh made another attack for

Poverty Bay, deceived the Hawke’s Bay full-backs and shot a clean goal— Poverty Bay 4, Hawke’s Bay 2. Clever work by Callaghan, A. Waugh and Bridge again put the Hawke’s Bay goal in danger, but after a scramble Collin cleared. Callaghan again took the ball down the line and a centre to Bridge gave the latter another opportunity to beat the Hawke’s Bay goalie. Poverty Bay were again attacking when the final whistle sounded. Poverty Bay 5 Hawke's Bay 2 Mr Mahon was the referee.
