50-Mile Championship SOUTH ISLAND EVENT By Telegraph—Press Association. DUNEDIN, Sept. 15. ' The 50-milo professional cycling championship of New Zealand was favoured with fine weather yesterday. Although there were no North Islanders present a field of 30 faced the starter, and included the pick of the riders m the South Island. The first man home was J. Elliott (Georgetown), off the 25-minutes mark, and he was followed by his brother G. Elliott, off 19 minutes. The championship and fastest time were secured by L. Thomas (Christchurch). Results:—

Watson (Christchurch) 2 hrs. 11 mins. 53 secs., dead heat, 2. * Amateur Championship By Telegraph—Press Association. INVERCARGILL, Sept. 15. After riding strongly over the whole course, F. J. Grose (Christchurch) became the South Island 50-mile road champion and registered the fastest time in the race conducted by the Invercargill Amateur Cycling Club yesterday. His time was 2 hrs. 17 mins. 55 3-5 secs. Grose won by a fifth of a second from T. Taylor (Christchurch) who was a fifth of a second ahead of W. Frame (Invercargill). J. Humphries (Invercargill) off the limit mark of 19 minutes, won the handicap race.
Over the first half of the race the riders had the benefit of a stiff westerly breeze, which they had to face all the way back from Edendale.
