PLOUGHING & DOG TRIAL

Patangata Club's Meeting SUCCESSFUL GATHERING Large Crowd Braves Weather (Special Reporter.) Postponed from July 10 on account of bad weather, the Patangata, Elsthorpe, Omakere and districts’ tenth annual ploughing match meeting was held yesterday on Mr W. A. Couper’s property, Patangata-Havelock North road. There were all the elements for a very successful meeting, except the one element which counts so much m all outside fixtures, and that was the weather. Yet, despite drizzly weather all day, following on two days’ rain, the attendance was surprisingly large, and the entries were also a good deal better than might have been expected under such conditions., There is little doubt that under better conditions as regards weather a record meeting would have resulted. I'iiero hub qune a largo number nt motor ears on the ground, and from these (protected by a shelter belt of trees) me dog trial and horse events on one side, and plougniug events on tlie other, could be seen in comparative comfort. However, those who braved tho slight drizzle of rain in the open fields had come well prepared lor eventualities, for odskins and gum boots were the order of the day with nine-tenths of the spectators, including those members ot the fair sex (of wuoni there was quite a considerable number) wfto were present. The arrangements for the meeting were very complete, and tor these a good working executive committee, and the honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr W. A. Tod, were responsible. The ground was a very suitable one for the purpose of such varied events, the paddock selected for the ploughing events being on a gentle slope, which was thus less wet and sodden than would a more level surface have been. Excellent jumps had been erected for the horse events, in which some of the best jumpers in the province competed. The dog triai secured surprisingly large entries, and was not completed until fairly late in the afternoon. Many good dogs failed to yard their sheep, but on the whole the work done was up to the average of such trials. There were two classes for three ewe hoggets, unshorn and shorn respectively, and these contained a very good lot of sheep. One of the most interesting features on the day’s programme wag a lecture on sheep, given by Mr A. L. Wheeler, certification officer for the New Zealand Romney Marsh Sheepbreeders’ Association. This proved most instructive and it is to be regretted that the attendance was not larger than it was, for the address was of such value to sheepbreeders that it merited a much larger audience. A refreshment booth was on the ground, and an excellent hot lunch was obtainable, the catering being in the hands of Mr Scarrott, of Bay View. A dance was held in the Patangata Hall in the evening, which was largely attended, and at which the prizes and trophies won during the day were presented. The following are the results:— (Judge: Air G. C. Bradley, Ongaonga). Class A. Double-furrow ploughs, open to all comers.—N. C. Baird, 76 points, 1; D. Smith, 64 points, 2; W.
