Breeding Ewes Variable

STORE SHEEP VALUES With an entry slightly bigger than last week, and of mixed quality generally, there was a somewhat variable tone on the store sheep market for breeding ewes at yesterday’s sale at Stortford Lodge. Hoggets, however, met with well maintained inquiry, and prices realised showed a slight advance on last week.

The breeding ewe sale was patchy, and in consequence several pens were passed in. There were few attractive lines of sheep ou offer, however, plaiuvr sorts predominating. Several very good pens of hoggets were offered, including drafts rrom Waipoapoa and Te Apiti Stations, and Mr J. J. Gateuby, which sold to close on the 20/- marit. Few wethers were on offer, aud these appeared to be making parity rates. A selection of the entries and prices paid, from which an idea of the state of the market may be obtained, is as follows:—

A Te Apiti entry of 155 whiteface wether hoggets, fairly grown aud woolled, fresh conditioned, made 17/0. . A further line of 179 hoggets, more mixed in size, made 16/6, Offered on account of the Percival Estate, a line of six-year ewes, run with Southdown rams, fairly framed and woolled, quite well mouthed, sold at 21/6. A draft of 57 whiteface wether hoggets, the tail-end of the Te Apiti entry, realised 15/4. Offered on account of Mr E. J. Wilson, Longlands, 60 forward conditioned well grown whiteface hoggets made 19/4.

Down from Te Pohue and on account of Messrs Kijjg Bros., a line of fiveyear ewes, run with Southdown rams from March 8, fairly framed, but mixed in the mouths and in the wool, made 17/6.

Fifty-seven four-year ewes, run with Southdown rams irom March, mixed iu size and store conditioned, sold at 18/5. a Waihou entry of 75 five-year ewes, fairly framed and woolled, mixed mouths, realised lfl/9Run with Romney rama from March 5, a line of 86 five-year ewes, on account of an Argyle vendor, well grown and woolled, well mouthed, made 20/3. Eighty-one Blackface wether hoggets, well mixed in size and condition, realised 14/8.

A draft of 104 four and five-year ewes, run with Southdown rams irom March, fairly framed and mouthed, quite well woolled, carrying store condition, made 19/-.

A pen of 161 two-tooth ewes, run with Southdown rams from March 17, fairly grown and woolled, store conditioned, realised 25/-. A draft of 69 two-tooth ewes, Border Leicester cross, well woolled, fairly framed and fresh conditioned, run with Southdown rams from early in March, made 26/3. A forward conditioned line of 223 two-tooth wethers, fairly grown and woolled, met the market at 20/-. Offered on account of Mr J. McDonald, Meeanee, a draft of 246 four and five-year ewes, well grown and fresh conditioned, quite well woolled, soundly mouthed, in kmb to Southdown rams put out on March 18, passed at 24/-.

A Waipoapoa station draft of whiteface wether hoggets, nicely grown and a good line, fresh conditioned, sold at 18/-.

A back-country line of 446 four, six and eight-tooth ewes, run with Southdown rams from early in March, fairly framed and woolled, passed at 24/4.

A pen of 73 forward conditioned wether hoggets, on account of Mr. J. J. Gatenby, realised 19/10.
