RECORD ENTRIES

Novices’ Boxing Tournament

TWO-NIGHT FIXTURE

A meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Boxing Association was held last evening, Mr. H. G. Apperley presiding over Messrs A. Chote, L. J. B. Hammond, R. Gray, J. D. Donovan and J. Stickland (bon. sec.). Members were given a pleasant surprise by the announcement that entries for the proposed novice tournament totalled 67—a record for Hawke's Bay and probably for New Zealand for such a fixture.

In view of the big entry it was decided that the fixture would have to be a two-night show and it was decided that it be held at the Municipal Theatre on August 1 and 2. To facilitate the staging of the programme it was agreed that all bouts in which the competitors were under Ost. take part in two rounds of one and a half minutes each in the preliminaries and the finals be two twominute rounds. All other bouts in the preliminary stages are to be three rounds of one and a half minutes and the finals three two-miuute rounds. It was decided that the admission charges for eacii night of the tournament be as follow:—Adults, gallery 1/-, dress circle and stalls 1/6, stage 3/-; boys, half price except stage and .women 1/- except stage.

Mr. H. J. Grieve, jeweller, of Hastings, wrote offering to donate a cup for competition at the tournament while the Waipukurau Boxing Club offered two cups for the same fixture. —The offers are to be accepted and the donors are to be thanked for their gifts. The balance-sheet for the Ormond Cup schoolboys’ tournament was before the meeting and satisfaction was expressed in the fact that there was a good credit balance to divide between the two schools (Parkvale and Mahora) concerned.

A challenge for the Ormond Cup was received from Waipukurau and is to be forwarded to Parkvale with the request that the fixture take place at the earliest date possible. Permission was given Parkvale to stage a schools’ tournament on August 9.
