Permits for Rubbish Fire
(To the Editor). Sir, —Last week 1 rang the Fire Brigade Station, as usual, to say I was going to light a rubbish fire, and was told that 1 had to get a permit from the Borough Council. This means that I have to go a mile to obtain this permit, half-a-mile there and the same back. How many in the borough have to go more than double that distance to obtain a permit? Then the trouble arises that one cannot afford to lose time on that particular day when the wind is in a favourable position to carry the smoke away from yours and your neighbours’ houses; so that day is put off and probably the rain comes —as in this case it has—and it is necessary to wait for another opportunity. What is the use of the telephone if it cannot be used for such a purpose as this} I consider the teouncil is very short-sighted in making such stringent and unnecessary rules as this and the sooner the ratepayers voice their opinions on this matter the better for the whole borough. In these hard times the council should strive to make conditions as easy as possible and not more burdensome. —Yours, etc., “OLD RESIDENT.” June 25, 1935.
