MEET AT PARK WOOLSHED
The hounds met at the Park woolshed, as the guests of the family Tod. We thought that the Braehead Hunt had provided the best hunt for years, but we found it equalled, and perhaps bettered. Another field of fifty good horses followed, and did it well. We found an enormous hare (in similar condition to the sheep on the Park) which ran us for fully five miles, and ran twice over Mt. Cook, to be eventually killed by the hounds alone. No horse could have followed this run. Our hosts seeing the condition of the horses, brought us back, they thought to something quieter and easier, and the quarry at the back of Mr Wallace Tod’s house was drawn. We found and ran this hare, we consider, for eight miles, killing at 4.20 in a water hole in Mr James Tod’s garden. This bare took us to Braehead and' back to Mr Wood’s and across a swamp. It then disguised itself as a cat. The hunt continued and we ran to the Kittow’s country, then to within view of the Tukituki, then over the high country which we thought we had said good-bye to, earlier in the day, then down and over more steep stull to Mr Evan’s house. It then led us in darkness back to Mr James Tod’s, where we killed. The writer considers this run, after 40 years with the hounds, the best ever.
