CONTEMPT OF COURT

Holmes and Smith Murders NEWSPAPERS APOLOGISE By Telegraph—Press Assn,—Copyright SYDNEY, June 21. Apologies for the publication recently in the "Telegraph” and "Sun” of certain matter bearing on the death of Mr Reginald Holmes, for which these papers were cited for contempt of Court, were made on behalf of the newspapers before Mr Justice Haise Rogers. Addressing the Court, Mr Evatt, inter alia, contended that there had been an attempt to connect in some fashion the death of Mr Holmes with the alleged disappearance of James Smith. Mr Justice Rogers reserved his decision as to the penalty to be imposed. Ho referred to the offence of prejudicing the question by referring to the death, by assuming that Smith was dead (which was a matter of controversy), and by stating that his death was duo to murder.
