MINE MUTINY ENDS
Rioting Prisoners Subdued LANSING (Kansas), June 20. The mutinous convicts were routed from the scorched and badly damaged mine which, in their struggle with guards, they had set ou fire. They surrendered following 21 hours of continuous rioting. The State Board of Prison Administration is now considering the question of punishment and inquiring into the demands of convicts regarding food and a change in medical administration which were the causes of the revolt. A cable published on Wednesday stated that a band of 380 convicts mutinied iu the Kansas State prison coalmine, seized tome of their guards as hostages, and fought with others 720 feet underground. The guards themselves, protected with masks, and using tear-gas, turned back the first assault of the rioting prisoners, who were seriously affected by the fumes, due to their confined quarters in the deep pits. All the telephone lines were cut except one, and this, which was connected with a “gun cage” containing five armed guards, brought little information, aside from an assurance from the defenders that they could hold the position indefinitely.
