HASTINGS WRESTLING

First Contest Next Week

PEREIRA v. WILLIAMS

Through circumstances over which the Hawke's Bay Wrestling Association had no control, wrestling enthusiasts in Hastings have had to wait unusually long before a start could be made with the new season’s programme. However, the announcement that next Wednesday evening there will appear in the Municipal Theatre ring Cy Williams and Al Pereira will be sufficient compensation for such disappointment as might have been experienced over the delay. Patrons of the wrestling sport have unquestionably a first-class match in store for them next Wednesday, and everything points to their witnessing one of the hardest, fastest and most thrilling bouts staged in this district. Both men are of the highest class, with reputations of considerable order, and are virile wrestlers, who can be relied upon, to provide keen competition. Williams, who is known as the "Cyclone,” certainly lives up to his reputation. A former American football star, he combines great-strength with a really clever style of wrestling. When orthodox methods are of no avail Cy resorts to other means of finishing his opponent, and this provides a maximum of excitement; hii methods, while rough, are extremely effective. Ho is said to be one of the best wrestlers to appear in this country, and his match with so formidable an opponent as Al Pereira will be keenly awaileS. The clever, versatile and exceptionally speedy Pereira need no introduction. to Hawke’s Bay enthusiasts, who have already had the opportunity of being most favourable impressed with his attainments. He, like Williams, knows how to keep the spectators’ interest sustained throughout every round, and from all accounts, he knows how to hold his own when the "Cyclone” is raging in full blast. Preceding the main contest will be a good selection of preliminaries, and these, together with the big bout, should provide a bill difficult to excel. The box plan is at Hall’s (’phone 4061) and in order to avoid disappointment, patrons are advised to book early.
