Treatment of Unemployed AUCKLAND MAYOR OUTSPOKEN (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 22. “The conditions under which meu on sustenance are required to assemble at tho Labour Bureau are fur from satisfactory, ami steps ha co been taken to bring them under the notice of the appropriate authorities in Wellington,” said the Mayor, Air. Ernest Davis, in an outspoken statement to-day. “Excluding for ths time being nn examination of the merits or demerits of the system of reporting,” he added,
"I have no hesitation in describing as wrong and humiliating the nature of the accommodation provided for the men who are compelled to report.” The Mayor said that on visiting the bureau to see the conditions he could not escape a feeling of depression. In bleak weather during winter it must accentuate tho misery of the men and undermine their self-respect. “I fail to see,“ he said, “the necessity for this further embitterment of the lot of those of cur unfortunate fellowcitizens who have to assemble regularly at the bureau. As Mayor of the city I should bo failing in my duty if I closed my eyes to the position. It is creating nn unnecessary spirit of unrest and is strongly opposed to the public interest.”
