FATALITY ABOARD SHIP
Men Struck by Falling Pole DIES FROM SKULL INJURY Accident in Grey River (By Telegraph—Press Association.) GBEYMOUTH, June 22. A fatal accident occurred aboard the Union Steam Ship Co.’s vessel Kakariki in tho Grey river at 2.30 this morning. Tho vessel was ready to put to sea. With the ropes cast off the bow, the boat was swinging In the river with a wire hawser attached to tho storm The hawser slipped and swung in to strike and break a flagpole. Able Seaman Robert Smillie, aged 47, a married man and a native of Tasmania, was struck on the head by the falling pole, fell back on the machinery and suffered a crushed skull. Dr. Hird ordered Mr. Smillie’s removal to the Grey Hospital, where he died at 4.45 a.m. following au operation. The Kaktiriki sailed for Melbourne at 3.15 a.m.
