HASTINGS ORPHANS

Last Night’s Kfrero

The gaiety that has marked the koreros of the Hastings Orphans’ Club since tho present season began was again a characteristic of last evening's meeting, when a very interesting and diverting programme was presented. Mr Donald Campbell, Chief Orphan, presided, and welcomed several new members as well as a number of visitors.

Ono of the most amusing items was begun by Mr Leon Fail, who, in a speech which all but those who were iu tlic secret took as quite serious, suggested that a change in the conductorship of the orchestra should be made. 'Thu conductor, Mr Bryant, also deceiving members by his seriousness, expressed his willingness to give up his position, and several others in the con. spiracy supported the proposal. Mr Bryant then handed over his baton to a number of aspiring conductors, and the results in the way of the response I rum the orchestra caused much laughter. When Mr Bryant took charge again, however, things were even worse, and this comic interlude came to a most vile climax. Further amusement was caused by a competition in which distinctly untalentcd members of the club tried out their hands at drawing, singing, instrumental music, and speech-making. Orchestral items, community singing, and the comments from the critics' table were other items in an excellent programme. In addition Mr H. J. Grieve sang solo songs and Mr J Warren gftv c yielro solus.
